Checking and resolving pending links

If you laid out your site in a navigation view before adding content to individual pages and hyperlinking the pages, some of the pending links between pages you established may still be unresolved. (That is, you may not have created equivalent hyperlinks for them.) You should check for unresolved links and resolve them as necessary.

You can also use the Page Inspector to resolve a pending link, without opening a navigation view. This may be a quicker method if you already know what page is the source of the link.

To check for unresolved pending links in a navigation view:

1 Open a navigation view of the site.

2 Choose Spotlight Pending from the Navigation tab menu to spotlight unresolved pending links. (For information on spotlights, see Spotlighting page groupings in navigation view.)

Pending links are spotlighted with arrows. Arrows point in the direction of the link, toward its target.

3 Choose Pending Pane from the Navigation tab. Selecting a page in the central pane will display pending-link pages in the pending pane--that is, pages that are the targets of unresolved pending links from the selected page.

4 Decide which unresolved pending links to resolve.

To resolve an unresolved pending link in a navigation view:

1 Double-click the page in the central pane that is the source of the unresolved pending link. This opens the page in a document window and displays the page or pages it has unresolved pending links to in the pending pane of the Navigation tab.

2 Select the source page of the link in the navigation view--that is, a page the pending spotlight arrow points away from.

3 Display the Inspector.

4 If necessary, move or resize the document window, Inspector or Navigation tab to make the pending pane visible.

5 Place a new link on the page in the document window.

To place a new link, select the location for the link and either click the New Link button on the toolbar or choose Special > New Link.

6 Drag from the point-and-shoot button of the Inspector to the target page in the pending pane.

When the hyperlink is created, the page is removed from the pending pane.

To resolve a pending link in the Page Inspector:

1 Open the source page for the unresolved link in a document window.

2 If you want text or an object already on the page linked to the page with the unresolved pending link, select the text or object.

3 Click the page icon to display the Page Inspector.

4 Click the Pending tab in the Inspector. The tab lists all pending links from the page, resolved and unresolved. The Nav column of the tab uses directional arrows to identify pages with pending links to the active page. The up arrow indicates a parent, the down arrow a child, the left arrow a previous sibling, and the right arrow a next sibling. These pages can be either resolved or unresolved links. The Pending column of the tab identifies the unresolved links with an icon.

5 Do one of the following:

  • If you selected text or an object on the source page, drag the page with the unresolved link from the Pending tab to the selection.
  • If you make no selection, drag the page with the unresolved link from the Pending tab to a location on the page where you want the link inserted. A new link appears at that location. Its text is the filename of the page you dragged.
